Dubai: Former champions Amit Panghal (52 kg), Shiva Thapa (64 kg) had to settle for the silver medal with the loss in the close match of the Asian Boxing Championship. India, however, demanded a review against the outcome of Panghal’s match, which was rejected by the jury.

Among the Indian boxers, only Sanjeet Kumar (91 kg) won the gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championships, defeating Olympic medalist Vasily Levitt. Sanjit Kumar gave Leavitt 4. Defeated 1 and established his reign in this tournament.

Rio Olympics gold medal winner and defending world champion Joerov Shakhobidin of Uzbekistan once again defeated Panghal 3–2 as the final match of the 2019 World Championships. In the second round, Panghal was completely overshadowed by the opposing boxer, while a split verdict was given in his favor. The result of the review will be known later.

The Boxing Federation of India tweeted, “The Indian Boxing Federation has tweeted that ASBC will appeal against Amit Panghal’s unexpected defeat in the final.”

Amit Panghal, referring to his coach after the match, tweeted, ‘I name this silver medal to my coach Anil Dhankhar.’

Thapa too lost to Mongolia’s Batrusukh Chinjorig by this margin. This is the fifth medal of Thapa in this tournament. He won the silver medal for the second time in a long time. In both the matches, the Indian boxers played a strong game but the decision of the judges was not in their favor.

In the first match, there was strong competition from the first round between the two boxers who had qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. In the first round, Panghal raised the level of his game and was able to avoid the opponent’s quickness and punches.

Panghal played a strong game in the third round despite an eye injury and he got more points from the judges in this round but he lagged behind on the basis of total points. Thapa also made a spectacular comeback after trailing in the first round against the Mongolian boxer. India has done their best in this tournament with 15 medals in terms of numbers. The team had earlier won 13 medals including two golds in 2019.

On Sunday, defending champion Pooja Rani (75 kg) bagged the gold medal while losing in the final to six-time world champion MC Mary Kom (51 kg) and tournament debutants Lalbutsahi (64 kg) and Anupama (over 81 kg). Later had to be satisfied with the silver medal.

Earlier, 8 Indian boxers Simranjit Kaur (60 kg), Vikas Krishna (69 kg), Lavlina Borgohain (69 kg), Jasmine (57 kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (64 kg), Monika (48 kg), Sweety (81 kg) And Varinder Singh (60 kg) got the bronze medal.
