A fisherman belonging to Nagapattinam district sustained head accidents as Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened hearth when he was fishing together with others off the Kodiakarai coast. A complete of 10 fishermen belonging to Akkaraipettai and Keechankuppam hamlets ventured into the ocean in a mechanised boat from Nagapattinam port on July 28, Nagapattinam fisheries division officers mentioned.
When they had been fishing within the sea southeast off the Kodiakarai coast close to the International Maritime Boundary Line within the morning hours of Monday, a quick craft of personnel belonging to the Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened hearth on the boats that had been fishing within the neighborhood, officers added.
“Lankan Navy personnel began attacking many boats within the space. First, they threw stones after which opened hearth. One of the bullets got here in direction of our boat and it pierced a partition and hit one amongst us named Kalaiselvan. The bullet scratched his head and he fell down unconscious,” Deepanraj, one of many fishermen who was within the boat, mentioned.
“We instantly turned our boat in direction of the coast and hastened Kalaiselvan to Nagapattinam GH. Since the bullet first pierced the boat earlier than hitting him, he has escaped with head accidents,” he added.
He pressured that the Lankan Navy allegedly opened hearth when the fishermen had been fishing throughout the Indian limits. The injured fisherman hailed from Akkaraipettai hamlet on this district.
Nagapattinam District Collector Dr Arun Thamburaj visited Nagapattinam GH and interacted with the affected fishermen. He inquired concerning the incident. The Coastal Security Group police, Q department, and Fisheries division officers are conducting enquiries. The incident led to rigidity in fishing hamlets of Nagapattinam district.
